Composition in Blue

Abstract composition painted in 1970 by Danish artist Torkill Edgar Madsen. The work is structured around a square format, with layered areas of muted colour and surface texture arranged in a balanced, architectural manner.

The palette is restrained, using grey-blue, earth and soft brown tones. Paint is applied in thin, worked layers, with visible surface marks and incised lines contributing to the overall structure of the composition.

A solid example of late 20th-century Scandinavian abstraction, housed in a simple frame that suits the scale and character of the work.

Oil on canvas, signed by artist Torkill Edgar Madsen (Denmark, 1937-1995) and dated 1970. 

Dimensions 78x78cm framed.

There is a chip to the frame and a small area of chipped paint, as shown in the last two photos. Personally, I think the paint chip blends in to the abstract painting and the chip into the vintage nature of the frame. 

It is a very impressive painting and definitely a statement piece.
