The Distant Farm

A beautifully understated mid-century landscape by Poul Hansen (1918–1987), painted in 1962.

An expanse of open countryside unfolds in soft olive greens, muted ochres and earthy browns, with a small white farmhouse nestled beneath a distant line of trees. Above, a pale sage-grey sky lends the scene a wonderful sense of quiet and space.

The painting has a lovely simplicity to it. Hansen uses broad, softened areas of colour and subtle changes in tone to capture the gentle contours of the fields, while the tiny white building provides a delicate focal point within the landscape.

There is a distinctly Scandinavian sensibility to the composition, with its restrained palette, natural colours and peaceful atmosphere. Its earthy tones would sit beautifully alongside antique furniture, warm woods and thoughtfully layered interiors.

Presented in a vintage gilt frame with a softly aged finish, which complements the painting's muted colours.
