Southern Harbour

A compact harbour scene composed in warm ochres and soft blue-greys. A cluster of terracotta-roofed buildings rises behind still water, their reflections dissolving into loose horizontal strokes. In the foreground, a small moored sailboat anchors the composition, while simplified masts and jetty structures create a quiet vertical rhythm.

Thiollier’s handling is direct and economical, with dark linear accents defining the architecture and boats against a fluid, atmospheric sky. The palette is restrained yet luminous, balancing sun-warmed façades with cool water tones.

About the artist: Thiollier was a French painter and lithographer who studied at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris and refined her technique in the 1950s at the René Jaudon workshop. She later settled in the Aquitaine region of southwest France, where she developed her distinctive structured landscapes characterised by strong linear definition and warm ochre-based palettes.

Drawing inspiration from Provence, the Camargue and travels abroad, her work balances architectural solidity with luminous colour.
