A beautifully expressive French floral still life by Maurice Chieze, painted in a distinctive palette of chalky whites, soft sage greens, smoky greys and vibrant vermilion reds.

A loose arrangement of flowers rises from a deep blue-green vase, with the artist using bold, layered brushstrokes and contrasting areas of colour to create a composition that borders on abstraction. The textured surface and expressive handling of paint give the work a wonderful sense of movement and spontaneity.

There is a particularly appealing contrast between the painting's cool, muted tones and its flashes of rich red and warm terracotta. Both modernist in character and timeless in subject, it is a striking piece that would sit beautifully in a contemporary or traditional interior.

Presented in a substantial, aged gilt frame with a grey-toned inner slip, complementing the painting's palette.

Oil on canvas by Maurice Chieze (France, 1945 - ), signed lower right.

Dimensions 73x51cm framed.
