Still Life In Blue

A striking still life painted with bold colour and heavily textured brushwork. A bouquet of red, blush and ivory flowers rises from a deep burgundy vase, set against a rich midnight-blue ground that gives the composition both depth and drama.

The painting has a wonderful physical presence. Thick layers of paint and simplified forms create a sense of movement across the surface, while the turquoise plate and pears introduce a softer counterpoint to the vivid floral arrangement. The paint is applied with such confidence and weight that parts of the composition feel almost sculpted rather than painted. The worn timber frame complements the palette beautifully, adding warmth and reinforcing the painting’s collected character.

About the artist: Olga Mischkine was a French painter of Russian heritage. Born in Roubaix, northern France, she developed a distinctive painterly style characterised by expressive brushwork, rich colour and heavily textured surfaces. Alongside her work as an artist, she also appeared in French cinema during the 1930s and 1940s under the name Olga Lord.
