Thistles

A very impressive, bold, textured still life centred on a cluster of thistles, painted with a distinctly expressive, almost sculptural handling of paint. Larsson builds the surface through thick, layered brushwork, creating a richly tactile composition where the forms emerge from a patchwork of ochres, creams, browns and muted blues.

The subject is treated with a loose, abstracted eye — the spiked heads of the thistles radiate outward, giving rhythm and structure against a more fragmented, atmospheric ground. The palette is warm and earthy, with flashes of yellow and white catching the light and lifting the composition.

The tonal palette makes it a strong anchoring piece, particularly suited to spaces with natural materials — wood, linen, stone — where its texture and warmth can be fully appreciated.

A characterful mid-century work with both decorative presence and painterly depth.
