Wildflowers by the Coast

An atmospheric Swedish coastal landscape painted in 1950 by Anders Hellsten, capturing the quiet beauty of wildflowers growing across an open, windswept shoreline.

The composition is wonderfully loose and expressive. Delicate white flowers rise from a patchwork of soft sage greens, buttery yellows, dusty pinks and muted lilacs, while dark, almost abstract brushstrokes suggest the uneven ground and low coastal vegetation. Beyond, the landscape stretches towards a distant horizon beneath a wide, pale grey sky.

What makes this painting particularly lovely is its painterly quality. Hellsten has allowed the texture of the canvas to remain visible in places, building the landscape through broken, spontaneous marks rather than precise detail. Up close, the individual strokes of colour feel almost abstract; from a distance, they come together to create a beautifully understated coastal scene.

There is a lovely sense of openness and stillness to the painting, with its restrained palette and delicate touches of colour. It would sit particularly well in a calm, thoughtfully layered interior.

An original oil painting on canvas, signed and dated 1950 in the lower right corner by Anders Hellsten (Sweden, 1916-1990).

Vintage condition with age-related patina, including some visible spotting and discolouration across the pale sky. The painting has a beautifully textured surface, with areas of exposed canvas consistent with the artist's loose, expressive painting technique.
