Low Horizon

A pared-back landscape structured through horizontal bands of muted colour. The composition is built from soft grey-blue sky, a dark tree line and pale, winding paths cutting through green ground. Vertical trees punctuate the scene, giving rhythm and anchoring the otherwise low, expansive horizon.

Orup reduces the landscape to tonal relationships rather than detail. Brushwork is broad and restrained, with forms softened at the edges so that they sit slightly into atmosphere. The palette remains controlled — blue-greys, olive greens and chalked neutrals — lending the work a calm, understated presence.

A composed and contemplative mid-century landscape, confident in its simplicity.

About the artist: Orup was a Swedish artist and influential designer within the post-war Scandinavian modern movement. He is best known for his innovative glass designs for Johansfors, where his structured forms and refined colour sensibility became widely recognised and are now represented in Scandinavian museum collections.

Alongside his design work, Orup maintained a painting practice that reflects the same disciplined approach to composition. His landscapes are built through simplified forms, flattened planes and carefully balanced tonal relationships, revealing a designer’s eye for structure translated into paint.
