The Old Vicarage

A charming early Danish landscape by a favourite artist of The Warner Store, Niels Mandrup Bruun (1918–1993), painted in 1936 when the artist was still a teenager.

Depicting Farup Vicarage in Denmark, the painting captures a quiet village scene, with whitewashed buildings and warm terracotta roofs nestled amongst trees and greenery. A sunlit pathway leads towards the buildings, while the dark, sweeping branches of a tree frame the composition overhead.

The painting has a wonderfully expressive quality, with loose, confident brushstrokes and a rich, earthy palette of olive green, ochre, warm brown and soft blue-grey. Thick passages of paint give texture to the stonework and rooftops, while the foliage is rendered in lively, spontaneous marks.

An atmospheric early work, full of character and the quiet charm of rural Denmark.
