Before the Storm is a striking Danish modernist landscape painted in 1955 by Paul Sørensen (1908–1982).

A cluster of small houses nestles amongst rolling fields beneath an expansive, dramatic sky. Painted in confident, broad strokes, the composition brings together rich cobalt blue, cool slate grey, earthy ochre, deep plum and touches of green.

There is a wonderful simplicity to the artist's approach. The landscape is reduced to expressive blocks of colour, with the small rooftops providing a charming point of contrast against the sweeping sky. The result feels both playful and atmospheric, capturing the anticipation of changing weather.

Presented in a vintage frame with dark wood-effect detailing and gold-toned edges, which complements the painting's bold mid-century character.

A distinctive original painting for lovers of Scandinavian modernism and expressive landscapes.

Oil on panel by artist Paul Sørensen (Denmark, 1908–1982) signed lower left and dated 1955.

Dimensions 42x58cm framed.

About the Artist

Paul Sørensen (1908–1982) was a Danish painter from Aabenraa in southern Denmark. He studied art in Hamburg during the 1920s and exhibited in Denmark, including at Kunstnernes Påskeudstilling during the 1950s.

His work encompasses landscapes and other subjects, often approached with a strong interest in colour and expressive form.

This landscape, dated 1955, is a particularly appealing example of his bold, painterly treatment of the natural world.
