Beyond the River

An expressive Swedish landscape by Josef Gustafsson, depicting a wooded hillside rising beyond open fields and a winding blue river.

Painted with confident, visible brushstrokes, the composition combines deep forest greens, earthy browns and warm ochres with a striking ribbon of turquoise-blue water. Above, a softly clouded sky introduces cooler shades of blue and grey, giving the landscape a wonderful sense of depth and atmosphere.

The painting has a distinctly modernist quality, with simplified forms and broad passages of colour creating a bold yet harmonious composition. The contrast between the dark, densely wooded hillside and the open fields below is particularly appealing.

Signed Josef G-son and presented in a light-toned wooden frame with a softly distressed cream inner border, which complements the painting's natural palette.

A characterful original landscape, full of colour, movement and expressive painterly detail.

Oil on panel by artist Josef Gustafsson (Sweden), signed lower left.
