Harbour Forms

A colourful harbour scene painted in Höglund’s recognisable, simplified style. Boats, masts and shoreline buildings are arranged in strong blocks of colour, with blue-greys and muted greens setting the tone and small touches of red bringing warmth to the foreground.

The forms are pared back and slightly flattened, giving the painting a graphic, almost constructed feel rather than a detailed depiction. It’s direct and confident, with a balance between solid shapes and open water. The result is direct and resolved — a mid-century coastal view with graphic strength and presence.

About the artist: Höglund was a Swedish artist and designer associated with the post-war modernist movement. Although best known internationally for his work in glass for Boda, Höglund also painted throughout his career, producing expressive landscapes and figurative compositions that share the same directness and structural clarity as his design work.

His paintings favour simplified forms, strong colour blocks and confident brushwork, reflecting a modernist interest in balance and construction rather than detail. Today, his work is held in several Scandinavian museum collections, and he remains an important figure in 20th-century Swedish art and design.
