Meadows by the Sea

Golden meadows meet the blue sea beneath an expansive, softly coloured sky in this beautiful Swedish coastal landscape by Ellis Wallin, signed and dated 1951.

Painted with loose, expressive brushstrokes, the scene brings together warm ochres, gentle greens and touches of terracotta, with little red farm buildings dotted across the distant countryside. Above, layers of pale blue-grey, blush pink and cream give the sky a wonderful softness and sense of space.

The painting has a lovely mid-century modernist quality, with broad, confident brushwork and an understated simplicity that feels both timeless and contemporary.

Presented in a handsome vintage wooden frame with subtle gilded detailing and a pale inner slip, this generously sized painting would make a beautiful focal point above a sofa, sideboard or bedroom chest of drawers.

Oil on canvas by Ellis Wallin (Sweden, 1988-1972), signed lower right and dated 1951.
