The Rooftops
- Free UK shipping
A striking Swedish cityscape painted in 1947 by Olle Pettersson (1905–1990), depicting a view across the rooftops from Maj Arnell's studio on Lorensbergsgatan.
A wonderful arrangement of steeply pitched roofs, chimneys and closely gathered buildings, the painting captures the architectural rhythm of the city from an elevated viewpoint. Pettersson uses a beautifully restrained palette of warm terracotta, dusty rose, chalky stone and muted blue-grey, building the scene through angular, expressive brushstrokes.
There is something particularly appealing about the way the rooftops overlap and intersect, creating an almost abstract patchwork of shapes and lines. The composition feels both intimate and expansive, offering a glimpse across the city from the quiet perspective of an artist's studio.
Its panoramic proportions give the painting a strong decorative presence, while the soft, earthy colours make it wonderfully versatile.
Presented in an attractive vintage gilt frame with a pale inner border, which complements the warm architectural tones of the painting.
A distinctive example of mid-century Swedish painting, full of character, texture and architectural interest.
Oil on canvas by Olle Pettersson (Sweden, 1905–1990) and dated 1947 and signed lower right.
