River Through The Hills

A beautifully light French landscape, painted with that effortless sense of space and colour that makes these mid-century provincial scenes so enduring. The river catches the sky in soft silver-blue tones, winding through the foreground before opening out into sunlit fields and low hills beyond.

There’s a looseness to the handling that keeps the painting feeling fresh — trees, water and hillside lightly described rather than tightly worked — while the palette stays warm and easy throughout. Soft greens and chalky blues are balanced by touches of ochre and terracotta, giving it that distinctly southern French feel.

It’s the kind of piece that quietly lifts a room. Calm, bright and very easy to live with, with enough scale to hold a wall without overwhelming it.
