Rooftops of Altea

A beautiful mid-century Mediterranean landscape by Helge Cardell, painted in 1964 and depicting the coastal town of Altea in Spain.

With broad, expressive brushstrokes and a wonderfully restrained palette, Cardell captures the whitewashed buildings and terracotta rooftops of the town beneath a soft turquoise-blue sky. Beyond the village, the distinctive mountain peaks rise above the landscape in muted shades of lavender, grey and dusty pink.

The composition has a striking panoramic quality, with simplified architectural forms and confident passages of colour lending the scene an almost abstract character.

Signed by the artist and titled Altea, Spanien on the reverse, where it is also dated 1964.

Presented in a slim silver-grey wooden frame that complements the painting's soft Mediterranean colours.

An atmospheric original painting that brings together the warmth of southern Spain with the expressive simplicity of mid-century European art.

Oil on canvas by Helge Cardell (Sweden, 1902-1972), signed lower right.
