Rural Light

A beautifully atmospheric French landscape painted in soft, broken strokes of celadon, cream and pale yellow. The view opens across a flowering field towards the distant church spire of Riec, rendered with a looseness that gives the painting its remarkable sense of light and movement.

Compard’s brushwork feels almost windblown here — sky, trees and meadow dissolving gently into one another — while the narrow pathway at the edge of the composition quietly draws the eye inward. The palette is especially striking: cool blue-greens and chalky whites lifted by flashes of warm yellow and muted pink.

There is something deeply evocative about the painting’s balance of structure and softness. It captures the romance of the French countryside without feeling sentimental, retaining the confident painterly surface and modernity that define Compard’s best work.
