The Evening Light

A beautifully atmospheric Swedish coastal landscape by Axel Olsson, capturing a rugged shoreline beneath a dramatic, muted sky.

Dark rocks punctuate the sandy foreshore, while pools of pale turquoise water wind towards the sea. Beyond, a band of deep blue-green water meets a low horizon, with soft greys and warm ochres suggesting the fading light of evening.

Painted with loose, expressive brushwork and a wonderfully restrained palette, the composition has a distinctly modernist quality. Broad passages of colour and simplified forms give the scene a quiet sense of movement, while the contrast between the dark rocks and luminous water creates depth and atmosphere.

Presented in a handsome vintage gilt-toned frame with a pale inner slip, which beautifully complements the painting's subdued colours.

An evocative original coastal painting, full of texture, character and understated Scandinavian charm.

Several fine vertical streaks are visible across sections of the painted surface, particularly towards the centre and foreground, as shown in the detailed photographs. The origin of these marks is unknown.
