The Quiet Cliffs

The Quiet Cliffs is a striking mid-century coastal painting by Swedish artist Einar Rosén, signed and dated 1953.

A dramatic arrangement of rocky cliffs rises above a narrow stretch of shoreline, rendered in broad, expressive passages of muted sage green, warm ochre, soft grey and dusty pink.

Rosén's confident handling of shape and colour gives the landscape an almost abstract, sculptural quality. Rather than describing every detail, the artist captures the weight and form of the rocks through strong, simplified planes of colour.

A pale, softly textured sky brings lightness to the composition, beautifully balancing the substantial rock formations.

The painting is presented in a generously proportioned vintage frame with a distressed painted finish and gold-toned detailing. Its gently worn surface complements the earthy palette and character of the artwork.

A distinctive original Scandinavian painting, with a wonderful balance of modernist simplicity and natural atmosphere.
