The Shifting Hills

The Shifting Hills is a striking mid-century landscape by Gustav Arne, signed and dated 1958.

The composition presents a sweeping landscape of angular hills and valleys, painted in a beautifully restrained palette of slate blue, charcoal, muted mauve, olive green and earthy brown.

Arne's confident use of shape and colour gives the scene an almost abstract quality. Broad, intersecting planes describe the contours of the land, while the contrast between light and shadow creates a wonderful sense of depth and movement.

A narrow band of pale blue sky opens above the hills, bringing balance and softness to the strong geometric forms below.

Presented in a vintage gilt frame with a pale linen-effect mount, which complements the painting's understated mid-century palette.

A distinctive original Scandinavian landscape, with a strong modernist character and beautifully considered composition.
